Craig’s list for New York Internships

A lot of college students use craig’s list for finding New York internships.  We frequently get asked by students whether or not you can get legitimate work from craig’s list.  Yes, legitimate New York internships are on craig’s list.  There are also a lot of scams and fake internship work.  There are much better ways to find internships, especially New York internships, but there is no harm in just checking out craig’s list to see what’s there.

So there are some legitimate internships on craig’s list.  But the companies that list them do so because they don’t know where else to find interns.  And it’s cheap.  Put yourself in the shoes of a company advertising a New York internship on craig’s list.  It only costs $25 and takes five minutes (at the most) to post a job.  Odds are, they won’t be expecting too much out of an intern.  The position is likely a cog job (job that requires little intellectual capability and many mindless tasks).

Today, I was checking out some New York internships on craig’s list as research for this article.  And behold, I stumbled upon this gem of an internship request.  This was the tite:

MOST CHILL INTERNSHIP IN NYC:  music/film/art/internet/chilling (Brooklyn).

It gets better.  This is an actual excerpt from the posting.

“We want you to be the best global intern Brooklyn has ever chilled with.  We don’t want you to just get coffee, we want a chiller to get coffee with us.”

Back to the point.  The intern would basically serve these guys as a personal assistant for no compensation, besides the college credit that was promised.

You can find New York internships on craig’s list but it shouldn’t be your first option.  If you are looking for New York internships, be able to spot a scam when you see one.

Interning in New York: Things to do After Your Internship

Although you may have landed a great internship in New York City, the workplace is certainly not going to be what you remember most.  Even if you are commuting two hours every day to work, you should definitely take time to explore the city at the end of your days.  While Manhattan can be a very expensive place to live, there are some great free and cheap things to do in the Big Apple.  They’re all just a subway ride away, and every bit worth checking out.  You may be a little overwhelmed by the subway system at first, but if you pick up a pocket map, it’s very easy to get used to.  Conveniently, you can go within blocks of just about anywhere in the city.

If you are working in midtown, Bryant Park is a great hangout.  Just about any night of the summer, something is going on.  Whether it be a movie showing, music, or a flea market, Bryant Park is a great place to go to and relax after a long day of work.  Each night of the week, there are performances at the People’s Improv Theater (or the PIT) that are either free, or under ten dollars.  These shows are always hilarious, and the performers usually involve the crowd pretty heavily.  Some nights, standup comedians can be found there as well.

If you’re feeling hungry, and you want to grab some drinks and food with some coworkers, some good all you can eat places include: Charles’ Southern Style Kitchen, Chola, and Bombay Palace.  There are plenty of other cheap restaurants around midtown.  A great resource for all kinds of activities going on throughout New York is ExcitingNY.com.  Check it out for any inspiration on how to spend your evenings in New York City.

Interning in New York

As a native New Yorker interning in Times Square last summer, I can safely say that getting to work can be quite the ordeal every morning.  While it was fun and exciting to be interning in the heart of the city that never sleeps, it would have been just as nice to work a few blocks over just to avoid the stress of getting to my office.  Every morning I’d get off the subway, just three blocks from my job, and half to shuffle to my desk for the next ten minutes.  If you are an out of towner interning in Manhattan this summer, first let me offer my congratulations.  You’re going to love it, New York is one of the greatest cities in the world.  Let me then warn you: learn the rules of the sidewalk.  It’s a common misconception that New Yorkers are mean, nasty people.  We’re actually very welcoming and polite, as long as you are considerate.

As I said, it would take me ten minutes just to travel three blocks every morning.  I am well aware that Times Square is a busy place, but this is no reason for such slow travel times.  99% of the time clueless tourists were to blame for the lack of movement in Times Square.  If you are walking on a sidewalk in Manhattan, and you decide to stop, you MUST MOVE TO THE RIGHT.  It’s just common courtesy.  Stopping in the middle of the sidewalk to stare at the new McDonald’s advertisement in Times Square (as unnecessary as it may be) can easily be done from the sidelines of the sidewalk, rather than in the middle of it.  Halting the in middle will result in some verbal abuse from those behind you, and certainly a lot of dirty thoughts in the mind of others.  Just with the simple veering off to the right, you will find that New Yorkers are a kind and loving people.

What to do during your New York internship

You’ve done the hard part: you already landed your New York internship.  Tons of college students want internships in New York, and a lot of companies run their internship program out of New York.  If you’re unfamiliar with New York City, we’ll help you find out where you to live and what do during your New York internship.

The New York University dorms are a great place to live for your New York internship.  They are in Manhattan and the security is great.  Some dorm locations are Washington Square and Union Square.  Both are right in the heart of New York City.  You would have a great time living in these dorms during your New York internship.  Most rooms are two connected doubles with a bathroom.  There are subway stops at both dorms, so everywhere you want to go is only a 10 minutes ride away.  It’s tough to find a better location for your New York internship.

You also might consider subletting an apartment or house with some of your friends.  The price varies depending on the housing market.  When it’s down, your sublet could be even cheaper than the NYU dorms!  And, what could be better than living in your apartment with a few friends?  However, if you find a good deal, you want to check out the place if you can and make sure it’s furnished.

As you’d expect, there are an infinite number of places to go in the city.  There are a lot of great bars and clubs to go to, and there are a lot of ones you should avoid.  You’ll probably have the most fun going out with friends and co-workers at some low-key places.  We advise avoiding the clubs while you’re interning in the city because they are pretentious and expensive.  But if that’s your scene, than knock yourself out.
